Underlay
Underlay stitches are used under the regular stitching in a design. The stitches are placed to provide stability to the fabric and to create different effects. Underlay is normally a series of running stitches or a very light density fill often placed in the opposite direction that the stitching will go.
Underlining
Lining used to add body to a garment.
Understitching
A line of stitching along the edge of a facing or undercollar to keep it from rolling to the outside.
Understitching
Keeps a facing or lining from rolling onto the right side of a garment. After pressing the seam allowance and facing away from the garment, stitch through both a scant 1/8" from the seam. Some people grade the seam allowance and facing/lining prior to stitching to eliminate bulk.
Universal Needle
A slightly rounded tip to use for woven or knit fabrics.
